Asus is all set to launch it new flagship gaming phone – ROG Phone 3. Here we’ll discuss, what we’ll get all in the the new top end gaming smartphone from Asus.
The Asus and Gaming
Asus has always been a brand that is popular for its gaming lineup. Asus is a Taiwan-based multinational computer and phone hardware and electronics company headquartered in Beitou District, Taipei, Taiwan. Its main products include technical devices like phones, laptops, wifi routers, graphic cards, etc. Asus is a big brand in the entire world because of its focus on gaming and devices to play games. They made their name in the gaming market by launching some of the best laptops for games and having RGB lights in everything. Their motherboards support RGB, the graphic card has RGB lights, the laptops have RGB keyboards and even their phones have RGB logos in them. This made them somewhat special in the gaming market, having everything RGB integrated is what gamers like nowadays.
Asus ROG & TUF Gaming Product Lineup
Let’s move to the gaming part now, Asus has mainly 2 gaming-oriented product lineups. Asus TUF and ROG, TUF stands for The Ultimate Force and ROG stands for the Republic Of Gamers. TUF was Asus’ first choice for gaming devices but as other companies grew in this area like Razer, TUF was losing the race in the market, so to overcome this Asus developed a new product lineup ROG, it was kind of similar to TUF and was more oriented towards high-end gaming. So as of now, TUF makes most of the laptops for low-middle end gaming, whereas ROG makes everything else for gamers.
Asus ROG Phones
ROG or Republic Of Gamers, under this Asus, manufactures almost everything a gamer will ever need. You can make a full PC out of just Asus parts now, search for this and you will find people that have done it. The product lineup includes Phones, Laptops, Desktops, Motherboards, Graphics card, Monitor, Headsets, Keyboard, Mouse, Webcams, etc.
Now, coming to the phone lineup as the article is about the new phone. ROG has launched ROG phone 1 and ROG phone 2 in the part. ROG phone 1 was kind of a huge gaming-centric high-end phone for the customers.
The best job it did was gaming. It never performed excellently in any other area and since this was their first phone people expected a lot of changes and upgrades from this to the new device. Then came the massive deal-breaker for the market, the ROG phone 2, the phone that was considered the next level gaming smartphone by a lot of people. Not only was this a massive improvement from its previous generation but also saw a couple of features that were not present when the phone launched, the 120Hz refresh rate was a jump from the previous 90Hz display, no phone ever saw that display before.
The 6000mAh battery was also a feature that many people thought was the best thing. The main jump was in the accessories that were present for the ROG phone 2, it was something you never expect from a phone. The external fan also made the device cooler which showed a massive improvement in gaming as snapdragon processors generated a lot of heat, plus the processor used in this phone was also an overclocked one, 855+. People overall loved the way ROG made this phone for gamers. The thing that attracted people to buy it was the cost of the device, in India it cost around 38,000 INR for the 128GB version and around 52,000 INR for the 512GB version. So expectations from ROG phone 3 are massive. Can Asus maintain the jump they made from ROG phone 1 to ROG phone 2 in the ROG phone 3??
Asus ROG Phone 3
The new phone in the ROG lineup is expected to release in July 2020. A new poster revealed by Asus and Tencent confirms that Tencent is partnering up Asus to make this phone. They also did this ROG phone 2. So, 2 new devices are going to get launched by Asus this July, the normal ROG device, and the Tencent variant. Asus ROG Phone 2 Tencent Edition was priced around Yuan 3,500 (approximately Rs 37,500). Whereas, the base regular variant was priced at Yuan 6,000 (approximately Rs 64,200). The company rebranded the Tencent Edition as the normal edition for India and launched it here at a starting price of Rs 37,999. So we expect a similar strategy from the company for ROG Phone 3 as well.
ROG 3 Design
The new poster suggested that the overall look of the phone will not change much from ROG Phone 2. It will have a big display with dual speakers on each side, a power button, and volume buttons, a headphone jack (because it’s a necessity for gamers and many high-end devices don’t have one), air triggers, not 1 but 2 USB-C charging ports – one at the bottom and one at the side for the charging while playing and an RGB backlit logo on the back. The phone will look cool like it’s previous generations and one can easily identify the ROG device because of the gaming look that this device will have.
ROG Phone 3 Specs & Features
The specs on this phone are a must to look at. It will be a high end performing device with everything maxed out to perform the best for playing games. Nothing is official now but the leaks by Qualcomm certainly tells us that this device will perform the best.
- Processor: Snapdragon 865, the latest and the fastest one
- Battery: 6000 mAh, like the previous ROG device
- RAM: 8 GB / 12 GB / 16 GB
- Storage: 128 GB / 256 GB / 512 GB
- Display: 6.9 inches 144Hz 4k Amoled Display
- Charging: Fast Charging up to 30W, Wireless Charge is not confirmed
- Camera: Triple camera setup on the back with 64 MP primary one and a selfie shooter of 14 MP
- OS: Android 10 and ROG custom UI on top with ROG mode
ROG Phone 3 Processor, GPU and Connectivity
All the specs seem pretty high end and will be something to look at. The Snapdragon 865 will be paired up with an Adreno 640 GPU and thus will be the best phone in gaming. Whether it will support 5G or not is still a mystery as there is no official statement or report on this. But as the phone is powered by a Snapdragon 865 which supports 5G and there are also several gaming devices such as Nubia which already launched a 5G gaming phone, ROG Phone 3 can implement 5G technology in it.
A good internet connection is a must while playing online multiplayer games and thus 5G will be an important part to look at.
ROG Phone 3 Display
The display of this phone is going to be massive, a 6.9-inch display with 144Hz or even 120Hz, as the refresh rate is not yet confirmed, will be a huge battery problem, and ROG phone 3 looks to tackle this problem with a massive 6000mAh battery and a side-mounted USB-C port. The display might look a little big but similar gaming phones made by Xiaomi, the Black Shark 3 Pro, have a 7.1-inch display and even the latest Samsung S20 Ultra has a display of 6.9 inches. ROG 3’s display is also expected to have a 1000nits+ brightness.
ROG Phone 3 Audio
The speakers in this device will be dual-mounted Dolby Atmos speakers to provide an ultimate experience while gaming. It will also feature a headphone jack to provide wired audio without any lag, this is an important feature for many gamers and is kind of disappearing from the market as Samsung and Apple don’t put one in their flagship devices now.
ROG Phone 3 Camera
The camera is one of the important aspects of any phone but in this device, the camera may not be that important. The last 2 phones didn’t perform well in this department but people are hoping to see better results in this device. The phone will feature a triple camera system and a single front camera. It will be of moderate use but nothing high end.
Asus ROG 3 Gaming Features
Asus Rog Phone 3 will going to have amazing gaming features. Some of them are here:
ROG Phone 3 External Cooling Fan
Rog 3 will be a gaming machine thus will start getting hot. Due to the heat the phone may give lesser performance and to encounter this Asus Rog Phone 3 is compatible with external cooling Fan that also come from Asus.
ROG Phone 3 Internet Connectivity
The ROG phone 3 is a new device, but it will be similar to its previous-gen and will not differ much in anything. The new device will have better connectivity if 5G is implemented. It will have a better processor but the jump is not that massive and most games will run the same on either device.
ROG 3 High Refresh Rate 4k Display
It will have a bigger and better display but most people still can’t differ between 90Hz and 120Hz, so only some with the finest eyes will be able to tell the difference between 120Hz and 144Hz and most of the games don’t even support 4k display and even 90Hz refresh rate. Partnering up with Tencent will make some games to run at the higher refresh rate but still who will be able to tell a difference. There will be a new and improved camera system but since it’s a gaming phone and according to the history of gaming phones the cameras’ will just still be moderate. It will have more RAM but after 8GB, everything becomes kind of an overkill for any game out there due to processor restrictions.
ROG Phone 3 Inbuilt Gaming Sensors
When we play games on mobile, we need some extra buttons and sensor to smoothly play the games. In ordinary smartphones you need to buy some external game pad to hold the phone and to provide you some extra buttons. But this is not the case with ROG Phone 3 because it has inbuilt gaming sensors.
Bottom Line – ROG 3
The final conclusion is that, yes this phone will be a new device and it will not have any major change in it, but that’s how phone companies work. It’s a new path for Asus and they are following it right. Make improvements in a device until something revolutionary happens. It will be a great device and the best one out there for gaming and people are excited about it and they should be.
